Smartphones, laptops top Gitex purchases

Smartphones and laptops led in terms of volume of purchase made, among different categories at the Gitex Shopper 2014 in Dubai, UAE, which also comprised home appliances, consumer electronics and gaming and entertainment, according to a report.

The Gitex 2014 Research Report found that one out of three purchases made were smart phones, which was driven by iPhone 6, which was on the top of the wish list of almost every visitor.

However, the high price tag and unavailability associated with the product ensured many takers for products of other brands, including Samsung S5, HTC One and Blackberry’s newly launched Z20 (passport).

The report also found that one out of four purchases made comprised a laptop, indicative of the resurgence of penchant towards the device. Discussion with respondents revealed that one of the factors, driving laptop (and other products as well) sales was availability of exciting offers, which involved, heavy discounts, purchase of bundle of products at discounted price, availability of freebies which included exciting free tickets to tablets along with various kinds of exciting prizes and lucky draws.

Meanwhile, E Max offers were the biggest crowd puller, catalysing towards higher sales.

The offers included Nokia Lumia 630 smartphone worth Dh599 ($163), Toshiba backpack worth Dh99 and accessories (entertainer booklet, mouse, headset and Norton antivirus) worth Dh447 apart from a guaranteed return flight to one of the 25 destinations across the world on purchase of a Dell Vostro laptop worth Dh3,199.

The return air ticket option was also available with various other E-Max products.

Though various other retailers such as Venky, Sharaf DG and Jumbo were offering exciting offers, the air tickets offered by E-Max seemed to be the winner.

The event showcased more than 35,000 products and highlighted the rising power of social media and viral marketing, which are becoming instrumental in driving marketing campaigns in the modern era. - TradeArabia News Service
