Saudi women lawyers can plead cases

Riyadh, October 18, 2012

Women lawyers in Saudi Arabia will be be allowed to plead cases in court for the first time from next month, reports quoting a Justice Ministry directive said.

The ruling, which will take effect at the beginning of next month after the end of the four-day Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha, will apply to all women who have a law degree and who have spent at least three years working in a lawyer's office, reports said.

In February 2010, the ministry had announced that it was preparing a rule that would allow practice by women lawyers.
