BES to host 'Green' festival

Manama, January 11, 2009

An environment festival that aims to raise awareness about the protection of marine life, resources and natural beaches will be held next month in Bahrain.

The three-day event is held under the patronage of Public Commission for the Protection of Marine Resources, Environment and Wildlife president Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

It is organised for the second year running by the Public Commission, Barbar Club and Bahrain Environment Society.

The festival will begin on February 4 and will target all levels of society including public and private sectors, institutions, political, social and environment activists.

It aims to encourage the public to take responsibility for the environment by maintaining local wildlife and natural beaches.

Organisers hope the festival will help to activate laws and regulations on environment protection and to launch an environment education movement.

The festival will begin with a clean-up campaign at Barbar beach with the help of local societies and environmental activists.

On the second day, a presentation will be given to highlight the experience of Barbar, Malkiya and Ma'ameer villages in maintaining marine life and beaches.

The presentation will be followed by a short movie, entitled Sea People Talk, produced by Bahrain Environment Society and presented by director Yousif Al Zeera from Environmental Films Voluntary Organisation.

A lecture on Marine Life and Society Environmental Rights will then be delivered by Bahrain Environment Society chairman Dr Shobbar Al Wedaie.

The third day will feature official speeches by organisers and sponsors, followed by an honouring ceremony for organisers, sponsors and contributors.

The ceremony will be followed by the opening of an environment exhibition at Barbar Club.

The rest of the day will feature environmental, photographic and cultural competitions, which will be supervised by Bahraini artist Abbas Al Mosawi.

Other events include an environmental drawing camp for children, which will be organised by Ibrahim Al Ghanim, in addition to sport and marine life activities, organised by Al Mosawi.-TradeArabia News Service
