European firms to implement Iran port project

TEHRAN, January 22, 2017

Nine European companies will implement Iran’s Shahid Rajaei Port development project, said a senior Iranian official.

The marine transport sector was among the first targets of Western sanctions, Mohammad Saeidnejad, managing director of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), was quoted as saying in an Iran Daily News report, citing Mehr News Agency.

While reiterating that all limitations had been eliminated in the maritime sector, he further added that following the removal of sanctions, 17 shipping lines returned to Iranian ports and the country's ships are now able to call at major international ports including those in Europe.

Saeidnejad cited insurance as one the substantial barrier faced by Iran's maritime transport explaining that international classification institutions have resumed activities with Iranian firms and insurance issues have been completely resolved and relevant services can be availed.

He also noted that when sanctions were lifted, Iran gained access to the competitive market and the no longer need to buy items from some specific companies.

Additionally, Saeidnejad revealed that a cargo of necessary industrial equipment for ports has been purchased and will arrive at Chabahar Port in the coming days.
