L&T wins contract for 380kV substation project in Saudi Arabia

India's top engineering and construction firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced that one of its key subsidiaries has secured an order to build a 380kV substation in Saudi Arabia along with the associated transmission interconnections.
This order comes in line with the Saudi Arabia's National Renewable Energy Programme that aims to increase the share of renewable generation in its energy mix, said a statement from the company.
L&T's Power Transmission & Distribution business had in October last year clinched multiple EPC orders from the kingdom for transmission lines and substations.
The scope of work includes engineering, design, procurement and construction of more than 400km of 380kV overhead transmission lines as well as a new 230kV gas insulated substation with associated automation and protection systems.
According to L&T, these repeat orders from the largest electric energy system provider in Mena region demonstrated the core strengths of the business and the customer confidence it has gained over decades of its association in the kingdom.
In addition to this, it has secured EPC orders from its major clients in Malaysia, Thailand as well as India for varied businesses.
L&T said the orders clinched by its Power Transmission & Distribution Business are in the range of Rs25 billion ($304 million) to Rs50 billion ($610 million).
The Indian construction giant said through a consortium, it has bagged an order to set up a 500kV transmission line associated with the transmission system improvement project for enhancing system security in the northern and central regions of Thailand.
On its Indian projects, L&T said it has taken up major transmission system expansion works to integrate Renewable Energy (RE) projects in RE potential zones in Gujarat and to evacuate power from solar energy zones in Rajasthan.
Further, it has received an order to implement an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) in the Greater Mumbai area in Maharashtra as well another for distribution infrastructure in Chhattisgarh.
On the contract wins, T. Madhava Das, the Whole Time Director and Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities), said: "The logical next step after 100% electrification is to modernise our distribution systems with smart & intelligent elements. We are happy to contribute to this front by combining our physical infrastructure creation and digital energy solution capabilities."
