Abu Dhabi launches interlocking concrete pavers certification

ABU DHABI, February 27, 2017

Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC), the entity responsible for developing quality infrastructure and raising awareness on quality standards in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, has unveiled a certification scheme to verify the quality of interlocking concrete pavers used in pedestrian pathways and roads across the emirate, said a report.

The interlocking concrete paver (also known as a segmental paver) has over the last couple of decades emerged as a very popular alternative to brick, clay or concrete.

The scheme allows suppliers and manufacturers of interlocking concrete pavers that meet the requirements outlined in the certification scheme to apply through the QCC’s Jawdah Online System and obtain the Abu Dhabi Trustmark, reported state news agency Wam.

The Interlocking Concrete Pavers Certification Scheme will ensure the compliance of these products to the Abu Specification for Interlocking Concrete Pavers, used in construction projects in Abu Dhabi.

Sultan Saeed Al Mehairi, the director of Information Services and Engagement Department at the QCC, said: "The Interlocking Concrete Pavers Certification Scheme was developed as part of the QCC’s mandate to support Abu Dhabi’s ambitious economic diversification strategy and achieve its effective integration into the global trade system as a leading manufacturer of quality, sustainable products."

"This goal will be achieved through the establishment of reputable local manufacturing standards for the government to build a supporting quality infrastructure around," he noted.

"The Conformity Schemes Services division at the QCC collaborates with relevant stakeholders including both regulators and industry partners to produce certification schemes that contain quality, safety and environmental performance requirements for various products, personnel and services. This assures that products, systems and personnel consistently meet the requirements outlined in a certification scheme that are tailored to the needs of regulators and consumers and capabilities of the industry."

Al Mehairi lauded Al Sultan Industrial Cement(ASIC), one of the biggest interlocking concrete pavers manufacturers in the Middle East, for being the first company to be awarded the certification.

He also stressed QCC’s commitment to facilitating the certification process of other companies towards enhancing the quality infrastructure in Abu Dhabi in line with global standards.
