Lufthansa celebrates 50 years of Kuwait operations

Kuwait, October 2, 2013

Germany's flag carrier Lufthansa is this year celebrating the fifty years of operation of its daily non-stop and direct route flights from Kuwait to Europe, Asia and North American destinations.

It was on July 5, 1963 when the first Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt landed in Kuwait. A Boeing 720 B reached Kuwait City after taking off in Düsseldorf and Frankfurt with stops in Rome (Italy) and Cairo (Egypt), said a statement from the airline.

The flight then continued to Karachi (Pakistan), Kolkata (India), Bangkok (Thailand), Hong Kong and Tokyo (Japan) – a quite extensive but normal routing during the 1960s.

Over all these years Lufthansa stayed a reliable partner in connecting the Northern area of the Arabian Gulf with Europe and beyond. Just last year the passenger numbers between both countries climbed above 100,000 passengers, said the German carrier.

Arriving in Frankfurt, passengers find easy connections to the airline’s choice of flights to 218 destinations in 82 countries. Lufthansa operates daily flights between Kuwait and Frankfurt, it added.
Carsten Schaeffer, the VP for sales and services, Southeast Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: “Over decades there is such a strong connection between our countries and the international business community that we are thankful for such a good co-operation with our partners and passengers in Kuwait."

"Our flights to and from Frankfurt are well received and our guests know that Lufthansa offers more connections to Europe, North America and beyond than any other carrier. We are content with this performance in times of a tough economic situation surrounding the aviation sector," remarked Schaeffer.

"Via Europe’s most punctual hub in Frankfurt business and leisure travellers from Kuwait can reach over 200 destinations in 80 countries," he added.

Schaeffer said the Lufthansa Group was on a fleet expansion and another 295 airplanes were on order, valued at more than 36 billion Euros at list prices and scheduled for delivery until 2025.

"Just last week Lufthansa has become the launch customer of the ultra-modern Boeing 777-9x and will fly the new Airbus A350-900 from 2016. Furthermore the presence of the group in the Middle East expanded impressively over the last five years with now 14 destinations in the area which are served by Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines," he stated.

“With the strength of Lufthansa’s network to Europe and beyond, we are in a position to serve more passengers, complemented by our products onboard and on ground. Providing optimal flights means more flexibility and choices for our customers. Our commitment goes further with the zeal of our team in Kuwait offering bespoke packages also as a result of great local partnerships,” he added.

Lufthansa’s First Class products received the 5-star award from Skytrax. On board, the Skytrax rating system singled out the superb comfort of the First Class cabin with ergonomically contoured seats, which convert into a fully flat, two-metre long bed.

Its First Class cabin staff was also awarded for their onboard service quality.

Earlier this month Lufthansa received the coveted International Five Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences (AAHS).

Peter Pollak, the general manager UAE and director for Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq, said: "In addition to the even better network opportunities from the GCC and Middle East, Lufthansa committed itself to invest euros 1 million every day (excluding the new airplane orders) for the next 1,000 days in better ground and onboard services."

"New seats in all classes, individual inflight entertainment in Economy Class, innovative First Class and Business Class as well as brand new lounges, will help us define new industry standards," stated Pollak.-TradeArabia News Service
