Special free flights for UAE soccer fans

Dubai, January 17, 2013

Emirates is providing two Boeing 777-300ERs to support the waves of football supporters travelling to Bahrain to cheer on the UAE in the final of the Gulf Cup of Nations.

The one-off flights, a gesture to mark the UAE national team’s performance so far, will depart Dubai tomorrow afternoon (Friday) with the return trips timed after the end of the match.

“We have already taken the initiative to sponsor the Gulf Cup of Nations as we want to contribute to the success of the tournament and while strengthening relationships in the Gulf region,” said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive Emirates Airline & Group.

“We are proud that our national team has reached the final and we wish the best of luck to our players. On this special occasion, we are offering two extra flights tomorrow to fly fans, free of charge, to Bahrain in order to support their team,” added Sheikh Ahmed.

In a further generous gesture, Sheikh Ahmed has agreed to provide a separate First Class flight to the entire UAE squad – in recognition of reaching the final.

The Gulf Cup of Nations final will see the UAE take on Iraq – a country Emirates now serves through three gateways; Baghdad, Basra and more recently, Erbil.

The free flight tickets to Bahrain are being coordinated via the UAE Football Association.

On the day of the match, registered passengers must arrive at the designated airports two hours prior to departure to receive their boarding passes.

Transportation from Bahrain International Airport to the stadium and back to airport will be provided for free flight ticket holders.

Meanwhile, UAE telecom firm du has announced the allocation of a second plane to take a further 280 loyal Emirati customers to Bahrain, to support the UAE national team.

In response to huge demand from its customers and with the addition of the extra charter flight, du will now fly a total of 630 fans to Bahrain for the match.

All Emirati customers participating in the initiative were invited by SMS. The seats were booked on a first come, first served basis.  - TradeArabia News Service
