Bahrainis told to leave Lebanon

Manama, September 2, 2013

A total 37 Bahrainis have been ordered to evacuate Lebanon amid escalating regional tensions, a report said.

They are expected to arrive in Bahrain today and tomorrow, the Foreign Ministry was quoted by the Gulf Daily News in the report

"They will be on several airlines, including Gulf Air," said a ministry spokeswoman. "We are co-ordinating with our representatives in Lebanon and the Embassy in Jordan to evacuate them."

It follows a series of bombings in Lebanon that have killed dozens of people and wounded hundreds, intensifying sectarian strife that has spilled over from the civil war in neighbouring Syria.

Bahrain issued a fresh alert against travelling to Beirut over the weekend because the security situation had deteriorated, said the spokeswoman.

"In terms of the travel alert, the ministry has had a warning since 2012 advising Bahrainis not to travel to Lebanon," she added.

"The reason we've it posted again is because the situation has become more serious. The exact number of Bahrainis in Lebanon is unknown, but we are working to find out and get them evacuated too."

Several countries have advised their citizens against travelling to Lebanon as regional tensions grow over a possible US military strike against Syria.

In addition to Bahrain, those issuing the advice included Kuwait, Britain and France, while Austria told its citizens to contact its embassy in Lebanon before travelling there.

According to reports, a senior security source in Lebanon said 14,000 people had left the country on Thursday alone, mostly Europeans.

On August 23, bombs hit two mosques in the northern city of Tripoli, killing at least 42 people and wounding hundreds.

The apparently co-ordinated blasts - the biggest and deadliest in Tripoli since the end of Lebanon's own civil war - struck as locals were finishing Friday prayers in the largely Sunni Muslim city. Lebanese officials have since appealed for calm. – TradeArabia News Service
