12 Scottish firms to participate in Gulfood

Dubai, February 20, 2013

Twelve leading Scottish food and drink companies are set to showcase their produce at this year’s Gulfood exhibition, the fifth time that Scotland has attended the event.

Due to burgeoning Scottish food and drink exports to the Middle East, more and more companies are spotting the potential in this market, and this is reflected in the fact that the Scotland stand will host seven new companies this year, a statement from organisers said.

The GCC is one of the fastest-growing global markets for Scottish produce and in recent years, Gulfood has proven to be a key enabler for Scottish food and beverage exports to the region.

As its companies set their sights on growing their presence in key regional markets, particularly in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and UAE, it is at Gulfood where major distribution deals to these countries are cultivated, the statement said.

The strong showing from Scotland at this year’s Gulfood follows a recent supermarket promotion of Scottish produce in Bahrain. Three months ago, fifteen leading Scottish food and drink companies took part in an initiative highlighting the best of Scottish food and drink in two of Alosra’s prime supermarkets last year in Bahrain in celebration of Scotland’s national day.

Colin Crabbe, regional manager for the Middle East, for Scottish Development International, Scotland’s inward investment agency, said: “Gulfood continues to provide a fantastic platform to showcase the Scottish food and drink industry. This is an exciting region and the UAE in particular has established itself as a global destination for fine dining.”

“We have seen a broad range of Scottish companies across a number of sectors succeed in developing strong business relationships here in the Gulf, and we hope to see more of this success at Gulfood this year.

“Thanks to the recent high profile of Scottish food and drink within the region, we anticipate strong interest from both Emirati and other Middle Eastern buyers in Scottish food and drink produce.”
