Police escorts for street cleaners in Bahrain

Manama, November 14, 2012

Street cleaners working night shift at one of Bahrain's rubbish collection companies are being given police escorts following a string of explosions across the country, said a top official.

Nearly 800 Gulf City Cleaning Company (GCCC) employees, operating in Manama and Muharraq, have also been given tips on how to stay safe while carrying out their duties, confirmed general manager Adrian Cockrem.

He said staff were understandably nervous while handling rubbish in the aftermath of the November 5 explosions, which killed two people and critically injured another.

Police earlier confirmed high-intensity Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were used in the five explosions, which happened within a five-hour period.

Cockrem said all GCCC supervisors had been briefed on the safety procedures to be followed by the cleaners, which have been communicated to those working on the ground.

"We have clearly told them if they are worried about their work, they will not be shouted at," he said, ahead of a seminar on municipal waste held at the Bahrain Society of Engineers in Juffair last night.

"They can take their time and be sure about what they are doing." – TradeArabia News Service
