Bahrain delegation set for India visit

Manama, October 23, 2013

A high-powered Bahraini business delegation will visit India later this year, it was announced yesterday.

Transportation Minister and Economic Development Board (EDB) acting chief executive Kamal Ahmed said he would be leading the delegation.

"Bahrain and India have economic, political and cultural ties that stretch back several centuries and we would look to enhance them," he said.

Ahmed's announcement comes alongside the Bahrain-India Trade and Investment Conference that started yesterday.

As part of its support for the event, the EDB organised business meetings for 40 Bahraini and Indian businessmen representing various sectors in order to strengthen investment ties and examine bilateral opportunities.

Indian participants represented a number of key sectors that offer promising opportunities for future co-operation for both sides including chemical, steel, packaging, cement, medical care, banking services, aviation and defence sectors.

"India is one of our most important trade partners and Indian businesses are increasingly prominent on the world stage," Mr Ahmed said.

"Economic opportunities and historic ties in the Gulf market make it a popular location for firms that are looking to expand internationally.

"Bahrain's skilled local workforce, low operating costs, tried and tested regulation and excellent market access make it an ideal location from which to access this market and we look forward to welcoming many more Indian companies in the future," he added.

A large number of Indian businesses have already established operations in Bahrain as a means of accessing the wider Gulf market, which is now worth $1.5 trillion and is set to reach $2 trillion by 2022.

On the sidelines of the conference, the EDB yesterday hosted a gala dinner for participants.-TradeArabia News Service
