GCC labour ministers vow to create more jobs

Manama, October 3, 2013

Labour ministers of the GCC and Yemen yesterday (October 2) agreed to unify efforts to create more job opportunities for their nationals across the region.

The pledge came during the opening of the 30th session of GCC Labour Ministers Council at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain, Hotel and Spa, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

They discussed issues including settlement programmes, bolstering social protection for job-seekers and increasing employment opportunities for women.

"There are challenges which are not separated from the fast pace witnessed in the world economically, such is the increase in unemployment and the continuation of the financial crisis and its effect on living standards," said Labour Minister Jameel Humaidan.

"This, as well as challenges faced locally and regionally, call for continuation in outlining visions and legislation that ensures growth and development. This can only happen by working as one Gulf team to ensure joint benefits as a priority."

He said a regional move to include more nationals in the labour market cannot happen without a true partnership with the private sector.

"The private sector is seen as the future of our economy and our main partner in the move towards development and creating job opportunities for nationals," he added.

The council also reviewed proposals to clamp down on human trafficking.

Recommendations of the meeting will be raised to the GCC council's executive office, to be implemented in the six Gulf states. Six Gulf companies were also honoured during the event for helping increase job opportunities for nationals in their countries. – TradeArabia News Service
