Bahrain to install new electricity meters

Manama, May 11, 2013

New electronic electricity meters are to be installed in homes, Minister of State for Electricity and Water Affairs Dr Abdulhussain Mirza said.

The Electricity and Water Authority is undertaking the project to replace metres in co-operation with an international company.

Energy subsidies last year topped BD350 million ($923.06 million), Dr Mirza revealed in a statement to our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.

He stressed the need to promote solar energy in Bahrain to slash soaring subsidies.

Dr Mirza said a research centre specialising in alternative energies and conservation policies will soon be inaugurated in Bahrain.

He also said that a solar-powered 5MW station would be opened later this year.

The National Oil and Gas Authority is setting up the plant under a partnership agreement with Petra Solar and Bapco, Dr Mirza said in a statement to Bahrain News Agency. – TradeArabia News Service
