UK parliament delegation to visit Bahrain

Manama, March 24, 2013

Senior British MPs are due to visit Manama this week as part of a parliamentary inquiry into the UK's relations with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, a report said.

A delegation from the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee will meet citizens and expatriates as they continue to gather evidence for the probe, according to the report in our sister publication, the Gulf Daily News.

A parliament spokesman confirmed the group, led by MP Richard Ottaway, will visit Bahrain and Saudi.

"As part of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee inquiry into the Foreign Commonwealth Office's foreign policy towards Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in the broader context of relations between the UK and the Gulf states, a committee delegation, led by MP Richard Ottaway, will be visiting the kingdoms of Saudi Arabia and Bahrain," he said.

No other details about the trip were available.

Several prominent British figures, who have lived and worked in the Gulf, earlier submitted extensive written testimonials as evidence to the House of Commons inquiry.

They include former ambassadors, retired military figures, businessmen, existing and former residents and human rights activists.

Other key contributors include the Bahrain Federation of Expatriate Associations and Citizens for Bahrain, a group of anonymous activists who oppose the protest movement, and best-selling British writer and historian Robert Lacey.

Several key figures have also given oral evidence during sessions at Portcullis House in Westminster, London, which started in January. – TradeArabia News Service
