Deadline for Alba response in bribery case

Manama, January 29, 2012

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), one of the largest smelters in the world, has less than a month to respond to a dismissal motion filed by an American company in connection with a multimillion dollar bribery case.

New York-based Alcoa has asked a federal judge in Pittsburgh to dismiss the bribery lawsuit filed by Alba, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Alba claims the company reaped more than $400 million in illegal profits by overcharging it for alumina, used to make aluminium.

However, Alcoa spokeswoman Lori K Lecker said the company has "moved to dismiss this case in its entirety because Alba's claims are not supported by law or by fact." The daily said Alcoa's motion followed Alba's failure to link the company executives' actions with any scheme.

It also said the lawsuit could not stand on its own as the claims centre on events overseas, which do not apply to federal laws.

Meanwhile, attorney Charles B Gibbons, representing Alba, said the company was confident in the case it submitted

Alba has until February 16 to file a response to Alcoa's motion.

The lawsuit filed by Alba in 2008 was on hold until November, when Judge Donetta Ambrose of US District Court ordered Alba to detail its bribery allegations.

Alba, seeking more than $1 billion in damages, has claimed Victor Dahdaleh, an Alcoa agent in Bahrain, owned or ran overseas shell companies used to funnel kickbacks to Alba officials and $13 million in commissions to Dahdaleh. – TradeArabia News Service
