Confront terror acts urges Bahrain chamber chief

Manama, November 11, 2011

Bahrain's business community has declared "enough is enough" and called on citizens to join ranks to confront terrorist acts such as blocking of roads and premeditated arson.

"The trade sector has had enough of these acts," Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Dr Essam Fakhro said.

He voiced traders' deep concerns over the escalation of terror acts.

He vehemently condemned the criminal acts which, he said, amount to a flagrant violation of citizens and expatriates' rights, security and freedoms.

He urged civil society institutions and citizens to stand united and speak with one voice against these acts. "They go against the values of tolerant Islam and Bahrainis' high spirit of patriotism and abhorrence of violence," Dr Fakhro said.

He warned against repercussions of the dangerous escalation on Bahraini society.

"Such an escalation could go out of control and lead to all-out sectarian strife, plunging Bahrain in a seditious inferno - whose reach only Allah Almighty knows," he said.

He held instigators - in Bahrain and abroad - responsible for the potential disastrous consequences of these acts - being the masterminds.

"Traders are fed up with such criminal practices," Dr Fakhro said, warning that Bahrain's economy cannot withstand the repercussions.

He called on clerics and scholars to promote fraternity among all Bahrainis and help defuse sectarianism. He described the chaotic acts as betraying the instigators' despair and bankruptcy, having found themselves in a tight corner.

"Your sectarian-mongering tactics have laid bare your claims of peaceful protests and belied your allegations," he said.

Dr Fakhro hailed the efforts of security forces in maintaining stability and protecting vital economic and trade facilities, yet urged more strict deterrent measures.

He said private companies are finding it hard to reinstate sacked employees or create new job opportunities as they continue to suffer massive losses.

He warned a lot of citizens working in the private sector could lose their jobs due to economic stagnation. He said Bahrain had suffered massive losses due to the unrest, warning that compensation would be difficult in the short term.

Dr Fakhro appealed to all parties to stop fuelling sectarian polarisation, before it becomes irreparable.

He also reaffirmed the industry and trade community's unwavering support for all steps taken by His Majesty King Hamad to maintain security and stability and protect hard-won achievements. - TradeArabia News Service
