Bahrain cracks down on ‘rogue clerics’

Manama, September 7, 2010

Bahrain is cracking down on rogue clerics accused of using mosques to incite violence, with work underway to draw up strict new rules governing Islamic preaching.

New rules are being outlined by the Justice and Islamic Affairs Ministry, after His Majesty King Hamad called for urgent action during a televised address, said a report in our sister publication, the Gulf Daily News.

Violators will be stopped from preaching and action taken against them, depending on the severity of their breach of the new rules.

"Sermons are there to emphasise Islamic unity and not for any personal gain whether political or anything else," ministry under-secretary Dr Fareed Al Moftah said.

"They are there to ensure that people live in harmony and peace regardless of their differences."

Preachers will be re-educated and trained in various aspects of life, to ensure they impart accurate and precise information.

Dr Al Moftah said the revamp would help improve individual preachers' skills and those caught violating guidelines would be punished.

"This sector is dangerous if used wrongly and to ensure that it isn't, preachers will be trained by specialists from all fields," he said.

"But when a preacher decides to throw away what we are offering as knowledge and instead shifts to division and extremism, other concerned government authorities will be called in to stop him,” he added. – TradeArabia News Service
