10 Emirati projects in 2nd phase of WSIS contest

Ten Emirati projects and initiatives have been shortlisted for the nomination phase of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) WSIS Project Prizes 2014.
 
UAE’s Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) has urged members of the public to vote for the shortlisted projects before April 18.
 
Mohammed Nasser Al Ghanim, TRA director general and chairman of the WSIS National Committee, said: “As the authority responsible for co-ordinating national procedure for WSIS Projects Prizes, we encouraged all institutions both public and private to participate in the award. Now, having shortlisted the Emirati initiatives, we are working to develop an integrated action plan to effectively enhance their chances of reaching the final stages.”
 
"Voting at this stage is crucial in selecting the winning projects and initiatives. From our side, the TRA will do it’s very best to inform the public on the voting mechanisms in place and urge traffic towards the WSIS Project Prizes platform - accessible via the TRA website - to ensure we give the ten Emirati projects selected the best chance of progressing through to the next stage,” he added.
 
The contest of WSIS Project Prizes is open to all stakeholders including governments, private sector, civil society, international organisations, academia and others. 
 
The contest comprises of 18 categories that are directly linked to the WSIS Action Lines which are in turn, outlined in the Geneva Plan of Action. 
 
The categories include ICT applications in the areas of e-commerce, e-agriculture, and e-learning, and e-science, and e-environment category; capacity building category; international and regional co-operation category; building confidence and security in the use of ICT sector category; and  the role of governments and all stakeholders in the promotion of ICT sector for development category.
