DHA participates in school seminar

Dubai, January 6, 2013

The Dubai Health Authority (DHA)’s health regulation department recently participated in a ‘Health for All’ seminar which took place at Our Own High School in Al Warqaa.

The school, which is one of the schools of the Gems group, conducted a day-long seminar to raise awareness about the health of school children.

The event included an art exhibition outside the auditorium by students of grade seven and eight, on  topics including the healthiest foods on the earth, protect your heart- prevent or even reverse heart disease, and foods to look and feel younger.

Dr Ramadan Ibrahim, director of health regulation at the DHA, said: “In today’s times a major health challenge facing the world and particularly the Middle East region is the high prevalence of diabetes and obesity.”

“Both these diseases are lifestyle-related and can trigger off other health problems such as cardiovascular diseases and high blood pressure. Regular exercise and healthy foods are essential to combating this health menace and school children should be the crusaders for change to ensure that our future generations are healthy.”

Amal Almehrezi, head of school health unit at the DHA emphasised on the importance of health education and campaigns to increase awareness among school children, teachers, nurses and parents about the importance of healthy eating. “The DHA will continue with its awareness programmes in schools in this regard,” she said.

“We are ensuring that we inculcate healthy habits among the students in our school,” Dr J Thavamani, medical officer of Our Own High School, said. “Students actively participate through the School Health Committee program. We are also closely working with the DHA School Health Regulation department in this regard.” – TradeArabia News Service
