Call to install smoke management systems

Manama, April 19, 2013

Having quality smoke management systems installed in high-rise buildings is integral to ensuring safety, said an expert at the Safety Design in Buildings conference held in Bahrain.

Organised by Sesam Business Consultants, the conference aimed at knowledge-sharing and implementation of global best practices in the region.

In the wake of increased fire and safety accidents in the GCC countries, the conference provided a platform for engineers, manufacturers, fire consultants, architects, regulators and professionals in the construction and contracting industry to debate issues surrounding fire safety strategies, building codes and standards,  reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

As one of the supporters of the conference, UAE-based engineering conglomerate Trinity Holdings also showcased, on the sidelines, products and services related to building safety and maintenance.

Speaking at the conference, Trinity executive director Allan Comello underlined the importance of adherence to building standards and design criteria with particular reference to safe paths of egress in high-rise buildings.

He highlighted the importance of having stairwells protected with well-designed stair pressurisation, certified fire resistant door, exit lighting and egress illumination installed in buildings.

"The heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system for the buildings should be adequately fitted with smoke detectors to shut off fresh air intakes thus obstructing the flow of oxygen to the affected area," he said.

"The penetrations for all services within stairwells and fire compartments should be adequately protected with fire-stop systems," Allan added.

The conference, part of a regional campaign to raise awareness about life safety in buildings, is supported by the American Institute of Architects Middle East, Society of Faade Engineering, Abu Dhabi Department of Municipal Affairs, Intersec, Schott Glass and White Aluminium Enterprises, among others.-TradeArabia News Service
