The choreographer’s popularity catapulted to new heights earning him global ballet laurels and recognition. 50 years on, The Legend of Love continues to wow its audience with exceptional spectacle of elegant pas deux and corps de ballet scenes.
The Legend of Love is a timeless Oriental ballet with deep philosophical overtones perfectly choreographed to narrate a dramatic love triangle between Queen Mekhmene, her younger sister, Shireen and the handsome Ferkhad. Grigorovich transforms this dramatic saga into a powerful performance of love, sacrifice and tragedy. Its phenomenon ballet techniques, enchanting melodies and captivating chronicle transcends time as the sisters battle for one man’s affection and eternal love. Choreographer Grigorovich, playwright Nazim Hikmet, music composer Arif Melikov and Simon Virsaladze create an outstanding scenography.
Grigorovich’s ballets dominate the repertory of contemporary works for over 30 years; his staging of classic ballets reflects his conviction that drama must always be expressed through dancing.Born in Leningrad into a family connected with the Imperial Russian Ballet, Yuri graduated from the Leningrad Choreographic School and danced as a soloist of the Kirov Ballet. It was his direction of The Legend of Love in 1961 that brought him much acclaim as a choreographer. While at Bolshoi Theatre, he worked on the classical repertoire including The Nutcracker, Spartacus, Swan Lake and Ivan, The Terrible.
