Oman International Hospital launches ‘Med Academy’

Oman International Hospital (OIH), the multi-super specialty hospital in Oman, has launched ‘Med Academy’, an exclusive centre for medical training, research and development, at its premises.

The Med Academy is established with support from Siemens Healthineers and will be the first of its kind in the private healthcare sector in Oman.

OIH soft-opened in May 2021 and was officially inaugurated by Dr Ahmed Mohammed Al Saidi, Minister of Heath, Oman on January 6, 2022. It has already achieved several milestones.

The establishment of ‘Med Academy’ comes close on the heels of the hospital accredited with the prestigious EFQM Certification two weeks ago.

Dr José Alexandre Cunha, Board Member of OIH and Chairman of IGHS Group that manages the hospital said: “It’s indeed a proud moment as we embark on yet another ambitious goal of establishing Med Academy. IGHS believes strongly in investing in research and development and training of doctors and health professionals, especially as we face greater health challenges in the form of pandemics, epidemics and outbreaks.

“Research and development can lead to new discoveries while training will improve our existing practices resulting in contributing to the overall health of a population. We will be working in tandem with the Ministry of Health, who have been very supportive ever since we stepped into this beautiful country.”

João Seabra, Head of Global Enterprise Services of Siemens Healthineers said: “We are very happy to be associated with the great work done at the multi-super specialty Oman international Hospital. With the dedicated Centres of Excellence and state-of-the-art equipment and modern facilities as well as a great team of doctors from Oman and across the globe, all guests are guaranteed high quality treatment.

“Going one step ahead, we are very thrilled to collaborate with OIH in establishing the ‘Med Academy’ through which we will enrich young medical students and also support various research and development projects.”

The Med Academy, established in the OIH premises, will have dedicated teams of R&D experts working on various disciplines while welcoming senior students and sophomores from various universities in Oman as well as abroad to stay and get firsthand training by working along with OIH doctors.

OIH has already welcomed final year students from the University of Porto and has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Coimbra.

The sprawling 42,000 sq m hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge technological solutions from across the world and is the home to five Excellence Centres- Women and Children Centre, Heart and Vascular Centre, Ortho and Spine Centre, Oman Vision Centre and Derma and Cosmetic Centre, a hybrid operation theatre and several other cutting-edge features and facilities.
