Abu Dhabi sees decline in occupancy and rates despite F1 Race

Abu Dhabi hotel occupancy, rates drop in Nov

ABU DHABI, December 29, 2015

Abu Dhabi hotels reported declines in occupancy, average-daily-rate (ADR) and revenue-per-available room (RevPAR) in November despite occupancy levels reaching above 90 per cent during the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend, said a report.

According to a report by STR Global, a leading provider of global hotel data, occupancy rates dropped 0.8 percent to 84 percent compared to the same month last year, while ADR slipped 6.5 per cent to Dh737.70 ($200.8) and RevPAR dropped 7.3 per cent to Dh619.38 ($168.6).

The report also showed that hotels in Oman posted a 4.8 per cent rise in occupancy to 69.8 per cent. However, ADR fell 13.2 per cent to OMR74.62 ($193), and RevPAR dropped 9 per cent to OMR52.05 ($134.7).

STR Global analysts attribute the decrease in ADR to macroeconomic factors such as a drop in oil revenue and a subsequent cut in spending.

Hotels in Saudi Arabia experienced a 1.4 per cent dip in occupancy to 52.9 per cent but witnessed increases in ADR (up 2.1 per cent to SAR765.57) and RevPAR (up 0.7 per cent to SAR405.02). While RevPAR in the country remained nearly flat, STR Global analysts note significant year-over-year increases in the Medina (up 34 per cent) and Makkah (up 14.1 per cent) markets.

Regionally, hotels in the Middle East subcontinent reported negative results in the three key performance metrics, according to November 2015 data compiled by STR Global.

Compared to November 2014, the Middle East subcontinent reported a 3.3 per cent decrease in occupancy to 69.2 per cent while ADR for the month was down 3.3 per cent to $204.97 and RevPAR dropped 6.5 per cent to $141.90.

In other parts of the Middle East, Egypt reported decreases in occupancy (down 18.7 per cent to 45.2 per cent) and RevPAR (down 8.2 per cent to EGP283.26). ADR was up 13 per cent to EGP626.30.

The October 31 plane crash in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, and reported terror involvement in the tragedy, resulted in the country’s steep decline in occupancy. - TradeArabia News Service
