Bahrain airport upgrade .... to boost passenger and cargo capacity.

Bahrain airport set for $2bn upgrade

MANAMA, December 15, 2014

Bahrain International Airport (BIA) is set for a major overhaul during the next five years as it moves to upgrade its facilities and expand passenger capacity through an airport modernisation programme.

The work will involve a "comprehensive" redevelopment of the airport to boost passenger and cargo capacity, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The cost of the upgrade has been estimated at around $2 billion and once completed, will boost capacity to 13.5 million passengers a year and increase in cargo traffic.

A key event next year being organised by Arabian Reach in association with the Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) will be a showcase of the opportunities that would be created due to the expansion.

BIA's "Aviation development forum for airport supplies, services and technology B2B show" being held on April 1 and 2 next year, offers the aviation industry stakeholders a networking and knowledge-sharing platform.

The Bahrain International Airport Development Forum 2015 (BIADF) will be held in conjunction with the second Middle East Cargo and Logistics Expo and Conference at the Gulf Convention Centre in Bahrain.

“With plans well underway for a major overhaul of BIA over the next five years and the anticipated upgrade to the airport’s facilities, as well as passenger and cargo handling capacity, this forum will provide an ideal platform to showcase the Kingdom’s prospective aviation capabilities,” stated Raj Menon, the managing editor of Arabian Reach Dubai.

Menon said the event would provide a great opportunity to showcase the Kingdom’s unparalleled regional connectivity and competitiveness as a major logistics hub.

"Boasting the shortest travel links between road, sea and air in the region, Bahrain is a strategically attractive access point to the $1.5 trillion Gulf market," he added.

BAC chief executive Mohamed Al Binfalah said in line with its ongoing efforts to elevate Bahrain's aviation and logistics capabilities, he believed the event will support the growth of transport infrastructure of the kingdom.

The aviation and logistics industry is getting bigger due to massive investments in airports expansion and new developments that are needed to accommodate the growth in air traffic in the region.

Key speakers from airports of Dubai and Abu Dhabi (UAE) besides Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, which are leading the region in terms of airport investments, will participate in the concurrent conference.

The event will also focus on the regional airport and logistics developments with decision-makers utilising the show to explore and finalise their procurements and supplies, thereby offering immense business growth prospects for global exhibitors.

"We will be using the event as a platform to scout for new technologies, products and services to support our development programmes and will provide excellent opportunity for logistics companies to explore business opportunities in the kingdom and the region," Binfalah added. - TradeArabia News Service
