Abu Dhabi runway closed for upgradation work

Abu Dhabi, March 15, 2014

Abu Dhabi Airport has shut down one of its runways to complete an upgradation work aimed at accommodating the A380 and other jumbo jets to help deal with the traffic flow, said a report.

The airport authorities have announced that the south runway is likely to remain closed until the end of this year to enable the completion of the upgradation work, reported the Arabian Business.

The runway will be off limits to aircraft as it is upgraded to allow it to accommodate larger superjumbo planes, it added.

The South runway started operations in 1982 with the opening of Abu Dhabi International Airport, and in 2009, Abu Dhabi Airports opened its second runway, the North runway to double its aircraft handling capacity.

The upgradation work was likely to be completed by the end of 2014 when the South Runway will be again operational, the report added.
