Manama chosen as 2014 Asian tourism capital

Manama, November 27, 2013

Manama has been chosen as next year's capital of Asian tourism.

Senior government officials from 33 countries in South East Asia have endorsed the move to promote Bahrain as a tourism hub, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

The news was announced by Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa during yesterday's third ministerial meeting of the GCC and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

It was also included in the Manama Declaration issued during the 12th Asian Corporation Dialogue (ACD), which concluded on Monday.

"We look forward to co-operation among the appropriate government and non-government tourism entities in our countries, and with the ACD Provisional Secretariat, to implement the proposals, and in particular to the nomination of the first Asian Tourism Cities from 2015," it states.

"In this context, we welcome Manama as the Asian tourism city for 2014."

Other key points included ACD members to work together to prevent and suppress terrorist acts, combating transnational organised crime, co-operation in the fields of energy security, establishment of the ACD Provisional Secretariat in Kuwait and applying the principles of "green economy" in the context of poverty eradication and sustainable development.

Meanwhile, GCC Foreign Ministers will meet in Kuwait today to prepare for the 34th GCC Summit in Kuwait next month.

Shaikh Khalid said a number of issues related to regional and international developments will be discussed, in addition to regional strategic co-operation.

"We will fix the agenda during the preparatory meeting and discuss several issues such as water desalination projects, economic matters and security," he said. - TradeArabia News Service
