F1 tourists set to arrive in Bahrain
Manama, April 16, 2013
Formula One fans from India and Indonesia will arrive in Bahrain within the next two days for the upcoming Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, said a top official.
They are being flown in by Mathias Tourism, which has already booked around 150 people to attend the race weekend at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), and tour major landmarks across the country.
The tourists have been waiting to experience the F1 thrill in Bahrain and visit cultural and historic sites, Mathias Tourism managing director Richard Mathias was quoted as saying by the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.
"These groups have been very keen to come to Bahrain for a while and this weekend is the perfect time to visit," Mathias said.
"Since India came on the Formula One calendar two years ago, there is a lot of interest being generated among enthusiasts there who want to come to experience the race in Bahrain as well.
"The tourists who are coming to Bahrain have communicated to us they want to visit the historic Manama and Muharraq suqs, the forts, the museum and Bait Al Quran. They want to experience the weaving and pottery-making as well as visit the burial mounds and the Tree of Life,” he added.
Mathias said his company has been preparing to welcome the tourists for the last year. "We have such groups coming every year and each time, the response is increasing," he said.
He added that the events in Bahrain over the last two years have dampened spirits among motoring enthusiasts, but things seem to be returning to normal.
"Everyone should realise the immense economic benefits the event is generating and these benefits are for the betterment of all," he said.
"Hundreds of millions of dollars coming in means we all benefit in the end. We are always keen to showcase Bahrain as a progressive and peace-loving nation and that is the message the visitors take back with them."
