Fire breaks out at under construction Qatari mall

DOHA, April 2, 2016

A fire broke out today (April 2) at an $825-million Qatari shopping complex under construction near a stadium on the western outskirts of capital Doha where it plans to host some of the 2022 Fifa World Cup, said a report.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, thanks to the timely evacuation of some 14,000 labourers and staff from Mall of Qatar, reported the Qatar news agency.

Video on social media showed a thick black cloud of smoke rising over the mall.

Qatar's Interior Ministry said on Twitter that firefighters were battling a blaze at the mall site near the Al Rayan Sports Club.

The gas-rich emirate is engaged in multi-billion-dollar work on projects directly or indirectly related to the 2022 World Cup.

The Mall of Qatar is a 500,000-sq-m retail and entertainment complex near the 40,000-seater Al-Rayyan stadium, which is undergoing renovation for the World Cup.
