A penny goes a long way
, February 19, 2017
Competitors including Michelle Chia from Singapore (L) starts in the Novice race event, at the National Penny Farthing Championships in the historic town of Evandale, northern Tasmania, Australia on February 18. The annual event began in 1983, and attracts tourists and enthusiasts of the penny farthing, invented over 140 years ago, in the 19th century, with a distinctive large front wheel, high seat, and small rear wheel. It is recognised as the first bicycle to be mass-produced and was named after the penny and farthing coins, the largest and smallest coins, once circulated in Britain. EPA/Barbara Walton
