Lake in canal row

, September 20, 2014

A fisherman casts a fishing net at lake Cocibolca, Nicaragua's largest lake, in Rivas on September 19. Local residents worry that the lake will be contaminated after it was announced that the Interoceanic Grand Canal will be built across the lake, according to local media. Chinese businessman Wang Jing sealed a controversial no-bid 50-year renewable concession from Nicaragua's Sandinista government in 2013 to develop the $50 billion canal to rival Panama's, and related facilities. Hundreds of people marched to protest against the construction of the Interoceanic Grand Canal that they said would affect their properties. Reuters/Oswaldo Rivas
