Bahrain to roll out VAT from January 2019

MANAMA, October 7, 2018

Bahrain's parliament has approved the implementation of value added tax (VAT), at the rate of five per cent, effective from January 1, 2019, media reports said.

Lawmakers on Sunday voted on VAT implementation behind closed doors during an extraordinary session.

Bahrain joins Saudi Arabia and the UAE, who implemented VAT on goods and services from January this year.

The government expects a revenue of about BD600 million ($1,596 million) from VAT implementation.

The Representatives Council also approved a report by the Services Committee on the pension system and the retirement remuneration of members of the Shura and Representatives Councils and the municipal councils. The council decided to refer it to the Shura Council.
