Dubai Expo 2020 key substation 80pc complete

DUBAI, June 20, 2017

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) said its 132/11-kilovolt (kV) substation being implemented within the Expo 2020 Dubai Park is 80 per cent complete and due to be operational by the end of August.

The substation named Mobility with a conversion capacity of 150 megavolt amperes (MVA) is one of the three major 132/11 kV substations being built by Dewa for the mega global event.

The other two substations have been named Sustainability and Opportunity after the three subthemes of Expo 2020, whose main theme is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.

The substations, with high-voltage 132 kV cables extending over 45 km, are being developed at an estimated total cost of Dh420 million ($114 million).

The Sustainability station is due to be operational in October, while the Opportunity station will be active from December.

In addition, Dewa is working on a project to extend major water transport networks, using 600- and 1,200mm-diameter pipes, as well as pumping stations and distribution networks, at an estimated total cost of Dh515 million ($140 million), to raise water flow and ensure the continuity of adequate supplies to meet the increasing demand for water.

"In line with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to host the best expo that the world has ever seen in Dubai, and to emphasise its commitment to sustainability, Dewa has also allocated Dh3 billion ($816 million) for clean-energy-related projects," remarked Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the managing director and CEO of Dewa.

"This is part of our support the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 that aims to provide seven per cent of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2020, 25 per cent by 2030, and 75 per cent by 2050," stated Al Tayer.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will provide 400 MW of clean energy to Expo 2020 Dubai, he added.-TradeArabia News Service
