Empower launches third Business Bay DC plant

DUBAI, May 18, 2016

Dubai-based Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling (DC)  services provider, has commenced operations in its third Business Bay district cooling plant.

The company said in a statement the new plant will cover commercial and residential buildings. With this, Empower currently provides 135,000 tonnes of refrigeration (TR) to the entire Business Bay area. The plant took around 12 months to complete construction, through a Dh186-million ($50.6 million) deal signed in April 2015.

Ahmad Bin Shafar, chief executive officer of Empower, said the third Business Bay plant follows the strict standards of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (Leed), and it also uses treated sewage effluent (TSE). “The new plant is a world-class model in the district cooling industry. It reflects our commitment in adhering to the highest sustainability standards and ensuring availability and efficiency,” he said.

In addition to this third plant, Empower operates two other cooling plants in Business Bay. The first was declared number one in following Dubai Executive Council's directives on environmental sustainability, while the second was the first in the Middle East to earn the gold rating of Leed's v2009 system, which is the most recent rating classification employed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

“The accelerated expansion in our client base and geographical area will further enhance our overall performance. We are moving at a steady pace in acquiring a larger share of the district cooling sector in Dubai. We also contribute in introducing new technologies in line with the orientations of the Government of Dubai in environmental sustainability,” added Bin Shafar.

“Empower’s network of district cooling plants covers the vital Business Bay area, so we ensured the highest efficiency and availability around the clock to achieve customer satisfaction in residential and commercial facilities,” explained Bin Shafar.

“The new plant represents the utmost efficiency in district cooling we have ever presented. It ensures reduced energy consumption for cooling operations, adopts sustainable technology of TSE, and applies a standard distribution technology that ensures reliable service,” concluded Bin Shafar. – TradeArabia News Service
