MDT ... to start work on biggest shutdown project.

MAN lands Oman refinery maintenance contract

MUSCAT, June 23, 2015

Germany's MAN Diesel & Turbo (MDT) said it has won a large shutdown engineering project contract from Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic) for its refinery in the Sohar region of the sultanate.

Under this multi-million-dollar contract, MDT will support a major maintenance turnaround of Orpic refinery during the first quarter of 2016.

The scope of work includes replacement of a regenerator head with a huge diameter and a steel weight of 250 tonnes besides installation of internal domes, said the German company.

The shutdown of the Orpic refinery in Sohar includes application of one of the world’s largest cranes, it stated.

For this giant project, MDT has deployed around 100 specialists from the company's office in Deggendorf, Germany, mainly to assure overhaul of key components of the residual fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) plant.

As part of the work, MDT will shut down all refinery processes in spring of 2016.

"This is the biggest shutdown project that MDT has ever carried out, going for both order value and the number of hours to be worked in engineering and production, and above all on site in Oman," stated Max Kilger, who is heading the project.

The German company, he stated, will also provide a significant contribution to Oman ‘In Country Value’ by making use of local logistics, manpower and infrastructure support.

"The contract with Orpic is a major milestone in the refinery expertise offered by MAN Diesel & Turbo in Deggendorf,” stated Franz Kufner, the head of apparatus construction at MAN Diesel & Turbo in Deggendorf.

“For example, the replacement of a huge jellyfish dome will be the world largest RFCC revamp till to date, with a very large diameter and an overall lifting weight of 680 tonnes. As a reference project, this will be of strategic importance especially in the Arabian oil and gas industry in particular," he added.-TradeArabia News Service
