Al Sada ... China's polyethylene could pose a challenge

US shale gas, China polyethylene may challenge Gulf petchems

DUBAI, November 24, 2014

Low oil prices, US shale gas and China's polyethylene could pose a challenge to the Gulf region's petrochemical industry, Qatar's Energy and Industry Minister Mohammed Saleh Al Sada said.

"One must not forget the potential impact of China's ... polyethylene, which could boost its plastic industry and could become a relatively low cost alternative to products from our regions or those products using the North American shale gas," he told a chemical industry conference in Dubai.

"There is no doubt that these main developments could pose a serious challenge to our region's petrochemical and chemical industry and its competitive edge as a result," Sada said --Reuters.
