Renewable energy in spotlight at Bahrain forum

Smart grids and renewable energy were under the spotlight yesterday on the last day of the GCC Power 2014 Conference at the Gulf Hotel's Gulf Convention Centre in Bahrain.
The discussions also focused on power quality enhancement approach using high efficiency and HPF step-down AC-DC converter, the role of establishing reliable communication system in transition to smarter power distribution system, and managing reliability of renewable energy assets, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.
Participants exchanged ideas on asset management for power systems, focusing on strategic thinking towards best selection and implementation of enterprise asset management.
Experts addressed the need for smart applications of underground and submarine cable systems, and adopting different techniques to enhance large-scale power systems.
Participants also discussed regional success stories such as the development of transmission system master plan of Oman (2014-2030), and the performance of power transformers and reactors in the UAE, Italy, Ireland and Germany.
The conference featured sessions and technical workshops dealing with the latest challenges facing the energy sector in the region, in addition to showcasing the latest technologies that could set up out-of-the-box applications and solutions.
Participants called for tangible recommendations at the end of the event that could be implemented across the GCC region, at a time when demand for electric power has been growing fast, mainly due to the rapid population growth, industrial expansion, massive infrastructure development and a rise in the standard of living.
