Esma launches smart system to monitor tyres

ABU DHABI, October 9, 2017

The Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (Esma) has launched a modern generation of tyre monitoring system in the UAE, which includes the use of a smart chip planted inside tyres and connected to a national vehicle monitoring system.

The system is seen as an effective way of monitoring the safety and reliability of vehicle tyres on the country’s roads, reported Wam, the Emirates official news agency.

The UAE is the first country to apply this system to improve the safety of passengers and decrease the rate of accidents related to sub-standard tyres.

Abdulla Al Maeeni, director-general of that Esma has developed the second generation of electronic chip technology to monitor vehicle tyres, to prevent the use of sub-standard or recycled tyres on the country’s roads and enable relevant authorities to prevent tampering and monitor the level of tyre safety, which will directly decrease the number of traffic accidents caused by the use of low-quality tyres.

He added that the UAE is the first country in the world to develop such an innovative technology, which was chosen by the Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation as one of its top 12 innovations. The smart chip has a unique serial number that is linked to the identification card of each tyre and can be read by a scanner or the driver’s smart phone, he further added.

Al Maeeni explained that the main goal of developing this type of technology is to introduce regulations that protect lives and public and private property and minimse the number of traffic accidents resulting from the use of sub-standard or recycled tyres.

"We are proud that we, in Esma, through this pioneering innovation, are the first in the world to adopt a smart technology to regulate and monitor the tyre market," he concluded.

During its participation in the Gitex Technology Week 2017, Esma will launch a number of innovative and smart initiatives implemented by the Authority in order to make the customers happy by facilitating their access to Esma services, in line with its strategy to raise quality of life indicators in the country .

He said that Esma will also launch the MANAA system next month, which will provide a control mechanism for electronic and electrical products in the UAE. The mechanism for information sharing, notification and reporting to consumers and regulators of infringing products, as part of the consolidation of national control efforts.

He concluded that Esma is always striving to excel in providing its services to partners and the public, developing new channels to achieve this, and applying the best available techniques in order to raise the quality of services and improve them in terms of innovation and creativity.
