Eid on Sunday in Gulf states

RIYADH, May 22, 2020

Saturday (May 23) will be the last day of the holy month of Ramadan and Sunday is the first day of Eid Al-Fitr, Saudi Arabia's Royal Court said in a statement. Other Gulf states will also celebrate Eid on Sunday.

The statement added that the new moon of Shawal, which follows Ramadan, was not seen today (Firday). Therefore, it has been decided that tomorrow (Saturday) will be the 30th day of Ramadan and that Sunday will be the first day of Shawal and Eid Al-Fitr, said a Saudi Press Agency report.

Bahrain's moon-sighting committee also announced that Eid Al Fitr will be on Sunday.

In a statement, the committee, made up of four well-known religious scholars, said it convened on Friday evening to receive testimonies about the sighting of the moon that would mark the start of the new month.

However, no-one came forward to testify they sighted the birth of the moon, meaning that Saturday would be the last day of the blessed month of Ramadan this year and Sunday the first day of Shawwal.

In Abu Dhabi, the Moon-sighting Committee in a statement issued after its meeting at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department said Sunday (May 24) will be the first day of Shawwal 1441 H, marking the beginning of Eid al-Fitr.
