Magnus ...keynote presenter

Economist George Magnus to speak at Euromoney Qatar

DOHA, November 27, 2016

George Magnus, a leading economist and the man credited with predicting that the US sub-prime crisis would lead to the 2008 recession, will speak at The Euromoney Qatar Conference 2016 in December, as one of the keynote presenters.

In his international keynote, he will examine the global economic outlook, especially in the aftermath of the Brexit referendum and the Trump presidency that will begin early in 2017.

“As an economist, the past period has been one of the most interesting in recent history, given the volume and range of economic shocks we have encountered, from Brexit in Europe through to the recent election of Donald Trump. However, what is interesting is not necessarily comfortable for people or for financial institutions, and it is important that we fully understand the challenges we are facing,” said Magnus.

As well as addressing recent events and their potential economic impact, the keynote presentation will also look at longer-term factors that will shape economic development, such as global debt, the changing position of China, and the long-term demographic challenges caused by an aging population.

Magnus sees this year’s surprising political developments in the UK and US as liable to roll-back into Europe, causing a major change in economic policies and in financial markets.

Victoria Behn, director, Middle East and Africa, Euromoney Conferences, said: “One of the major benefits of attending our Euromoney Conferences is the blend of local intelligence and global insight available, and we’re very excited to welcome George Magnus to speak at our Qatar conference for the first time. His comments will provide valuable insight into the international trends likely to impact Qatar, and we will also welcome senior Qatari leaders to provide local perspective.”

Magnus is an independent economist and commentator, who is currently an associate at the China Centre, Oxford University; an external senior adviser to UBS and to other financial institutions; and sits on the advisory board of the Montreal-based Bank Credit Analyst. From 1995-2012, Magnus was the chief economist, and then senior economic adviser at UBS Investment Bank.

He has written significantly about the global economy, receiving plaudits in particular for having predicted a ‘Minsky Moment’ in 2007 as the financial crisis was starting to erupt, and the author of “The Age of Aging” – a study of how demographic change is influencing the world.

Held under the patronage of Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister of State of Qatar, and co-hosted with the Qatar Central Bank, the theme of this year’s Euromoney Qatar Conference will be “Building a new financial ecosystem,” looking at the models and policy shifts that will be required to address current issues relating to liquidity, debt and public spending.
