Dubai police nab 6 in exchange robbery case

DUBAI, December 19, 2015

Dubai Police has arrested all the six members of an armed gang involved in a brazen daylight robbery at Al Razouki Exchange in Karama area of the city last week, said a report.

Four masked men had burst into the exchange at around 4.30pm on Sunday (December 13) brandishing a toy pistol, a taser and tear gas canister, then threatened three employees and a security guard before looting Dh700,000 ($190,531) and making a getaway in under three minutes, reported the Gulf News, citing Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Dubai Police Chief.

The gang had used a BMW car with a fake plate number to escaape and latyer set fire to the vehicle in an area not far from the exchange office, he added.

Soon after the incident, the Criminal Investigation Department of Dubai Police set up special teams to hunt down the culprits. All border points were sealed immediately, and the first suspect was caught while trying to leave the country.

He initially denied being involved in the robbery, “but when we caught the rest of them, it was game over. They all admitted to the crime,” Major Gen Al Mazeina was quoted as saying in the report.

Two other men were arrested for aiding them, one by providing and driving the car used in the robbery, and one for acting as a lookout and keeping the stolen money. The men were all from an east European country, the report added.
