Call to fast-track Gulf Union plans

MANAMA, September 12, 2015

Fresh calls have gone out to fast-track plans to establish a Gulf Union amidst regional instability and terror threats.

The need to draw up a unified GCC strategy to confront terrorism was highlighted by Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) executive director Dr Khalid Al Ruwaihi.

He said it was vital for the GCC to establish a more robust co-operation in the shape of a union, after 60 Gulf Arab soldiers, including five Bahrainis, who were part of a Saudi-led coalition were killed in an attack last week in Yemen, reported the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

Efforts to combat the influence of the Islamic State (IS) in the region are also underway, with Bahrain taking part in a US-led coalition, alongside Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
