Hate crimes law urged in Bahrain

MANAMA, July 22, 2015

A Shura Council member  in Bahrain has appealed to His Majesty King Hamad to enact an urgent law banning hate crimes, discrimination and contempt of religions.

“We are in a dire need of such a legislation as the region is engulfed in destructive wars, sectarian-tainted conflicts and internecine disputes which are bleeding countries,” said Darwish Al Mannai.

The plea came in the wake of a groundbreaking law-decree in the UAE, prohibiting any form of discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, creed, doctrine, race, colour or ethnic origin, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

Al Mannai, Shura Council human rights committee member, stressed the need for such a holistic law that takes Bahrain’s specificity into account.

“Such a law has become a necessity amid plots targeting the Arab region, reminiscent of the moribund divide and rule colonial policy,” he said. - TradeArabia News Service
