MPs at yesterday’s session

New fishing law planned in Bahrain

MANAMA, July 1, 2015

A new comprehensive law to organise all aspects of the fishing industry will be drawn up by the Bahrain government.

MPs yesterday (June 30) made more than 50 recommendations for the law, which would officially recognise the industry as a profession, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.

That means licensed fishermen would qualify for pensions, as well as financial, logistics and technical support.

It will also organise the issuance of licences and renewal besides determining allowed spaces and yield.

The law will also set out punishments for fishermen who break it, while introducing rules designed to protect the environment and marine resources.

Parliament forwarded the proposal to the Cabinet yesterday, giving the government six months to prepare the draft legislation.

MP Ali Al Ateesh claimed it was needed to end discrimination in the issuance of fishing licences and punishment of violators.

“Licences are given through connections and people are let go because they have connections,” he claimed.

“The biggest example is destruction of Tubli Bay, which is protected by law, by VIPs reclaiming lands or fishermen’s improper shrimping.” - TradeArabia News Service
