Bahraini woman completes ‘Ironman’ NZ contest

Gulf Aluminum Rolling Mill Company (Garmco), a Bahrain-based international aluminum rolling mill and downstream aluminum facility in the Middle East, sponsored May Al Haji in the ‘Ironman’ New Zealand competition held earlier this month.

The competition consisted of a 3.8-km swim, 180-km bike ride and a 42.2-km run - covering a total of 226Km, said a statement.

Al Haji completed the ‘Ironman’ challenge in 14 hours, becoming only the second Bahraini woman to complete the distance, it said.

Hind Al Sabbagh, head of Corporate Communications at Garmco, said: "We are pleased to have supported and sponsored Bahraini May Al Haji in her participation in this international tournament. As an organisation, we are dedicated to empowering women in various areas, including sport.

“This, and overall talent development, is of great importance to Garmco and forms a core part of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.  We congratulate May on this remarkable achievement and result, which confirm the ability of Bahraini women to compete in sport at key international forums."

Al Haji serves as a general secretary of the Bahrain Triathlon Federation and was a board member of Bahrain Road Runners between 2012 to 2014, said the statement.

She is an avid runner, cyclist and triathlete, who has taken part in several triathlons including the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon in March last year and inChallenge Bahrain in December, where she won first place in the local women's category, it added. - TradeArabia News Service
