MANAMA, February 28, 2015

The expatriate community costs Bahrain a total of BD344.292 million ($907 million) every year – a monthly average of BD28.910 million ($76.2 million), said a report.

Citing results of a study conducted nine years ago, Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) chief executive Ausamah Al Absi said each migrant costs the government BD55 ($145) monthly.

“The monthly cost includes subsidised meat, flour, education, power and water, transportation, roads and other services,” he said in a statement, adding that Bahrain bears BD660 (1,740) for each migrant every year, reports our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.

Based on the nine-year-old study indicators, non-Bahraini workforce has so far cost the country BD3.089 billion ($8.14 billion).

According to an LMRA study, there were 521,656 expatriate workers in the kingdom by the third quarter of last year, up by 1.2 per cent compared with the same period in 2013.-TradeArabia News Service
