Egypt buys 2.9m tonnes wheat in 6 months

CAIRO, December 26, 2014

Egypt, the world's top wheat importer, has bought around 2.9 million tonnes of wheat during the first half of 2014-2015 fiscal year, a top official said in a report.

According to Mamdouh Abdel Fattah - vice chairman of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), Egypt has bought those amounts of wheat at a total cost of 5.5 billion Egyptian pounds ($768.8 million) on the international markets, said the Amal Alghad report.

GASC has recently contracted to purchase a total amount of 300,000 tonnes of wheat from Russia and France, including 240,000 tonnes of French wheat and 60,000 tonnes of Russian wheat, it said.

The wheat will be imported starting on January 21 over a period of 10 days, it added.
