The most female winners in Bahrain
since elections started in 2002

Six women voted to power in Bahrain polls

MANAMA, November 30, 2014

Six women have been voted into public service in this year's national polls, the most female winners since elections started in 2002, a report said.

They include three female MPs and three municipal councillors, reported the Gulf Daily News, our sister publication.

Fatima Al Asfoor, Ruwa'a Al Hayki and Jameela Al Sammak, all from the Northern Governorate, secured seats in the 40-seat parliament for a four-year term, while Bodoor Bin Rajab (Northern), Sabah Al Dossary (Muharraq) and Fatima Mohammed (Northern) landed three of 30 available municipal council posts.

Only one of them won during the first round of voting on November 22, while the remaining five were voted in yesterday through a second round run-off.

Five of the six have been elected in the Northern Governorate.

It means Bahrain has one fewer woman in parliament, despite a record number of female candidates contesting the election, but it is the first time three women have held council posts at the same time.

Officials did not reveal turnout figures for the second round of voting, but did confirm that nine separate cases in which people are challenging the outcome of the elections in different constituencies are ongoing. – TradeArabia News Service
