Bill to outlaw subletting approved in Bahrain

A new rent law that makes subletting an offence punishable by eviction has been approved by parliament following Shura Council's amendments.
Under the 64-article law, a new quasi-judicial commission will be established to resolve rent disputes between tenants and property owners in Bahrain, said a report in the Gulf Daily News (GDN), our sister publication.
While occupants will be officially barred from renting out rooms to others, a tenant's rights to use all facilities within their building for free unless otherwise stated in their contract will be enshrined in law for the first time.
Meanwhile, a draft law presented by Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro that aims to keep pace with the latest economic developments was approved and referred to the Shura Council for study.
The law is designed to fill a vacuum in current legislation with respect to standards and metrology, to ensure compliance with international practices.
Parliament also rejected a government-drafted bill to control imported foods on the basis that it was redundant and approved a new law to increase military pensions, referring both to the Shura Council. - TradeArabia News Service
