Bahrain joins worldwide ATA carnets network

Manama, June 2, 2014

Bahrain has joined the worldwide network of countries that accept and issue "ATA carnets," also known as a "passport for goods."

The ATA carnet is an international customs document that permits duty-free and tax-free temporary importation of goods for up to one year without the need for the normal customs procedures.

"The Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) has been appointed the national ATA carnets issuing and guaranteeing organisation," remarked BCCI chief executive Nabeel Al Mahmood.

ATA carnets reduce paperwork and costs for business people, he added.

The system covers all goods with the exception of perishable items.

"The expansion of world trade, has led to significant growth of temporary exports and imports of different kinds of goods and with the implementation of ATA carnets in Bahrain, the national economy is set to benefit from the simplified customs procedures," said Al Mahmood.

The ATA carnet system is administered by the International Chamber of Commerce's (ICC's) World Chambers Federation (WCF) and the Brussels-based World Customs Organisation (WCO).

Currently more than 70 countries are a part of the global network. The Members Services Department of the BCCI will assume responsibility for issuing and guaranteeing carnets.

Both members and non members can avail the facility.-TradeArabia News Service
